Particle packing constraints in fluid-particle system simulation

چکیده
A procedure is described for limiting the void fraction in fluid particle systems, computed by means of numerical multiphase flow simulation codes, to values which do not fall below those realisable in practice. It is based on a computation of the particle /particle contact forces which come into play only when computed void fractions fall to values below those corresponding to random packing of the particles. The general method is illustrated with reference to the process of sedimentation using a specific fluid-dynamic formulation of the equations of change for fluidization. Without the particle contact force algorithm, the particles compact to the physically meaningless void-fraction of 0.17; with the algorithm the random packing value of 0.4 is achieved. # 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Numerical Simulation of Particle Separation in the Fluid Flow in a Microchannel Including Spiral and Acoustic Regions
Particulate separation has many applications in medicine, biology and industry. In this research, the separation of polystyrene particles with a diameter of 10, 20 and 30 μm in the fluid flow of a microchannel is investigated. The microchannel consists of a spiral region and a straight region under the influence of acoustic waves. In the spiral region, the particles under hydrodynamic effects u...
متن کاملA Numerical Simulation Study on the Kinetics of Asphaltene Particle Flocculation in a Two-dimensional Shear Flow
In the current study, the kinetics of asphaltene particle flocculation is investigated under a shear flow through numerical simulation. The discrete element method (DEM) is coupled with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to model the agglomeration and fragmentation processes. In addition, a coalescence model is proposed to consider the attachment of colliding particles. The changes in mean asph...
متن کاملParticle Technology and Fluidization Simulation of Fluidized Beds and Other Fluid- Particle Systems Using Statistical Mechanics
The expansion behavior and structural phenomena of fluid-particle systems was simulated using a method analogous to the Monte Carlo method for molecular systems. Individual particles are moved, and the resulting moves are accepted or declined based on the change in the system’s potential energy and the average kinetic energy of the system. Several fluid particle systems have been successfully p...
متن کاملNumerical simulation of effect of non-spherical particle shape and bed size on hydrodynamics of packed beds
Fluid flow has a fundamental role in the performance of packed bed reactors. Some related issues, such as pressure drop, are strongly affected by porosity, so non-spherical particles are used in industry for enhancement or creation of the desired porosity. In this study, the effects of particle shape, size, and porosity of the bed on the hydrodynamics of packed beds are investigated with three ...
متن کاملComputational fluid dynamics simulation of the flow patterns and performance of conventional and dual-cone gas-particle cyclones
One of the main concerns of researchers is the separation of suspended particles in a fluid. Accordingly, the current study numerically investigated the effects of a conical section on the flow pattern of a Stairmand cyclone by simulating single-cone and dual-cone cyclones. A turbulence model was used to analyze incompressible gas-particle flow in the cyclone models, and the Eulerian–Lagrangian...
